17 October – 19 October 2008 Oudtshoorn Weekend

To kick off the new summer season of Triumph rides, the Cape Town RAT Pack embarked on a weekend away to Outshoorn!

The weather could not have been better with warm, sunny skies for the entire weekend.  For the most part the wind played its part also (but came back with a vengeance on Sunday!)

The RAT Pack disembarked at roughly 10:00 AM (with yours truly having to make a pit stop immediately on departure) and headed out via the N1. The route took us over the Du Toitskloof Pass and then through Woescter and Robertson.

From Robertson it was onwards through Montague and onto Barrydale where we had lunch at the Country Pumpkin. Sadly between Robertson and Montague we lost one of our RATters to the corner after the aptly-named hole-in-the-wall. (Not to worry though, he was unharmed, but had to make use of the accompanying back-up bakkie and trailer.)

With full fuel tanks (and tummies) we departed The Country Pumpkin and made our way onwards through Ladismith, Calitzdorp and finally onto Oudtshoorn.  Due to a minor breakdown of communication Astrid and myself ended up separated from the rest of the RATters and took to wondering the Oudtshoorn main road until Kevin was able to track us down and herd us to our final destination: The N. A. Smit Holiday Resort.

Once settled we departed for supper and then settled in with good friend Jack for a nightcap.  The following day we had breakfast in Oudtshoorn and then proceeded to George via the breathtaking Outeniqua Pass. From George we continued to Mossel Bay before having lunch at the picturesque Eight Bells Mountain Inn.

The evening’s entertainment included a braai at the N. A. Smit Holiday Resort and more than a few kind words from Arnold (the Triumph Motorcycles Representative.) This was followed by another visit with our friend Jack for a friendly night cap.

The ride back to Cape Town was again taken via  Route 62 and included a breakfast stop in Barrydale. There the gruop split up with some choosing to do the Tradouw Pass, while the remainder going straight through along the R62.

The trip was capped off (as has become a tradition with these journeys) at the Ferryman’s Tavern.

A warm and hearty thanks from all the RATters goes out to Mike Hopkins Motorcycles for organising this outing, with special thanks to Kevin, Mark and Keith who went out with us!

Here’s looking forward to a great year!

All the photos from this trip are in the Gallery section, and after the jump…
