North Cape Weekend

RAT legend Marc van Est sent in the following report and some images from a phenominal weekend run up to the Northern Cape:

“Had a blast this weekend – 1780 kms

Worked out brilliantly, great riding just two of us as we could stop whenever we wanted, and didn’t have to wait to regroup. All the guys who faded lost out!

Bike ran like a clock, no sign of its gremlin all weekend. Must be a stop/ start related bug. Mail below is edited to remove the speeds we did.

Saturday

CT – Vanrhynsdorp – Niewoudtville – Calvinia – Sakrivier – Brandvlei

Boring up to Clanwilliam, got more entertaining after that but misty and cold to Vanrhynsdorp.

Vanrhynsdorp to Niewoudtville great riding and very quite. Stopped to look at the falls there, very cool. The motor museum was closed.

Bike lost the bolt holding my right bars clamp on to the way to Calvinia. Major problem but managed to find a bike mechanic on a Saturday afternoon to find a bolt and fit it for me. Got to love small town friendliness! Very peed-off with the Hout Bay dude who changed the fork fluid –   very dangerous – if it had come off later and the safety nut failed I would have had a big accident.

Calvinia to Garies – fast bike heaven!

Bike would not go past  —  with my pack on the back – it was hitting a wall at  —. Ians bike with the smaller pack ran to  —, very impressive.
(I guess we will have to ask Ian and Marc in person…?)

We tried lost of runs against each other -at lower revs the ST1050 pulls away, then I haul it back in to  — odd, when the pack on my bike starting acting like a parachute and he pulled away again. The ST is a lot quicker than I thought it was.

Brandrivier was fun -watched the rugby at the Pomphuis bar – very festive.

Sunday

Brandvlei – Kenhardt – Keimoes – Kakamas – Augrabies – Pofadder – Srpingbok
Up to Keimoes very inspiring, and super fast country. no cars, no cops, just flat out for two hours. I like the big sky scenery.

Nice breakfast in Kenhardt.

Keimoes and Augrabies great, Pofadder is a dump, flat out from Pofadder to Sprinbok but we had a strong side wind -very tiring.

Springbok is a dump – unfriendly tourist trap.

Monday

Springbok – Kamieskroon – Garies – Vanrhynsdorp – CT

Road from Srpingbok to Garies was quiet, in good condition and quite entertaining.

Some great high speed sweeps, plus some other bikers to play with along the way.

Boring between Nuwerus and Vanrhynsdorp – dead straight and we were worried about traps, so kept our speed below 160.

Absolutley terrible after Clanwilliam with mega holiday traffic.

I’m going to do this one again, but leave out the Pofadder/ Springbok loop.

cheers

Marc”
